Telluride vs. Sorento: A Tale of Two Kia SUVs

If you're shopping for a three-row Kia SUV at Oakes Kia in North Kansas City, chances are you've already landed on two of the brand's most popular models: the all-new 2027 Kia Telluride and the 2026 Kia Sorento. Both are excellent family haulers with impressive technology, strong safety ratings, and Kia's class-leading warranty. But they serve different buyers in different ways.

The 2027 Telluride arrives as a full ground-up redesign — Kia's biggest SUV gets larger, more powerful, and more luxurious than ever before. The 2026 Sorento is the smart, right-sized alternative: more affordable, easier to maneuver, and available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid forms that stretch your fuel budget. Read on for a full breakdown so you can walk into Oakes Kia knowing exactly what you want.

Size & Interior Space: Telluride Thinks Bigger

The 2027 Kia Telluride is Kia's largest three-row SUV, and the redesign only made it bigger. At 199.2 inches in length and riding on a 116.9-inch wheelbase, the new Telluride stretches approximately 14 inches longer than the Sorento. That extra real estate shows up where it matters most — in the second and third rows, and in the cargo hold.

2027 Kia Telluride

The redesigned Telluride delivers 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row and a maximum of 89.3 cubic feet with all seats folded. A new second-row slide-and-tilt design makes accessing the third row easier, and the longer wheelbase means genuinely more legroom in rows two and three. This is a true full-size family hauler.

2026 Kia Sorento

The Sorento is intentionally more compact, offering 12.6 cubic feet behind its third row and up to 75.5 cubic feet with rows two and three folded flat. The third row is best suited for children or short trips, but the first two rows are genuinely adult-friendly and comfortable. If you rarely need three rows, the Sorento's smaller footprint is actually an advantage — easier to park and navigate around the Kansas City metro.

Verdict: Need maximum passenger and cargo room? The Telluride wins. Prefer a more manageable size for everyday driving? The Sorento makes more sense.

Performance & Powertrain: Both Get Turbos, One Goes Hybrid

The 2027 Telluride makes a bold move for its second generation: the outgoing V6 is gone, replaced by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 274 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque paired with an eight-speed automatic. Step up to the Telluride Hybrid and output climbs to 329 horsepower with an EPA-estimated 35 mpg combined on select trims.

The 2026 Sorento offers two gasoline engines depending on trim: a naturally aspirated 2.5L producing 191 horsepower in the LX and S, and a turbocharged 2.5L making 281 horsepower in the EX and above. The Sorento is also available as a hybrid (up to 37 mpg combined) and a plug-in hybrid with up to 31 miles of all-electric range — an option the Telluride does not currently offer.

Telluride Turbo

274 hp and 311 lb-ft from the base 2.5L turbo. Strong, responsive, and more efficient than the old V6 it replaces.

🔋

Telluride Hybrid

Up to 329 hp and an EPA-estimated 35 mpg combined — a powerful case for going hybrid in a full-size three-row SUV.

🔌

Sorento Plug-In Hybrid

Up to 31 miles of all-electric driving. Ideal for Kansas City commuters who want to minimize trips to the gas station entirely.

Verdict: The Telluride Hybrid is the high-horsepower efficiency pick. The Sorento PHEV is the best choice for drivers who want to minimize fuel costs on daily commutes.

Technology & Features: Both Punch Well Above Their Price

Kia consistently over-delivers on technology relative to price, and both the Telluride and Sorento reflect that. Standard across both models: a 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and Kia Connect with over-the-air update capability.

The 2027 Telluride goes further at the top end. Higher trims offer a 12-inch head-up display, available Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube streaming through the vehicle's own data connection, in-cabin display themes from Disney and all 30 NBA teams, and the Kia myQ Connected Garage system that automatically opens your garage as you pull into your driveway. The X-Pro trim adds a Ground View Monitor that shows a real-time composite view of the terrain beneath your vehicle at low speeds.

The 2026 Sorento delivers the essentials at a lower price. Upper trims include a dual 12.3-inch panoramic display, a Bose premium audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, surround-view camera, and Kia's full Drive Wise safety suite standard on every trim. The SX Prestige adds Digital Key 2.0, allowing your smartphone to serve as your vehicle key.

Verdict: The 2027 Telluride leads on headline tech features. The 2026 Sorento delivers the essentials exceptionally well at a more accessible price.

Safety: Both Covered, Kia's Warranty Seals the Deal

2027 Kia Telluride

Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring with Kia's blind-spot camera system, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, driver monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and speed sign recognition. Highway Driving Assist 2 is available on upper trims for semi-autonomous highway driving.

2026 Kia Sorento

The Sorento earned a five-star overall NHTSA safety rating. Kia's Drive Wise suite is standard on every trim, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and steering assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver attention monitor.

Both vehicles are backed by Kia's industry-leading warranty: 5 years / 60,000 miles bumper-to-bumper and 10 years / 100,000 miles powertrain coverage — one of the strongest warranties in the automotive industry, honored at Oakes Kia in North Kansas City.
